A Deep Ellum Dinner with Joan As Policewoman

Joan, we know you as an acclaimed violinist and singer/songwriter, but we want to get to know the more culinary side of you. Tell us how you eat.

Joan: I really do like food. I tend to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. If I had to name one thing, Papaya comes to mind.

Wow, papaya? Any Latin roots?

Joan: Not that I know of. I'm definitely a mutt though. Definitely a lot of French, some Native American, and then a labyrinth of a bunch of Euro shit.

What got you into it?

Joan: I think it was more of when I moved into New York. I try to eat it every day. I could get it really easily in NY. I live in a village area that has these amazing produce markets. So yeah, if I had to live off of a fruit, I would eat papaya.

Are there any special additives you like on it? Brown sugar or cream cheese?

Joan: Nah, you just open it up and eat it. I bring it with me in tupperware. It's good stuffs!

If you go out to eat, where do you frequent?

Joan: There are lots of Polish restaurants where I live. I wish I could tell you their names but they all look like.. "Efrakyah yeahsoh" to me.

All those letters together?

Joan: Yeah, I just can't even try. It's really good food, but it's really, really heavy. Stuff like stuffed cabbage that's so good. Stuffed cabbage with meats! And porgies, stews and stuff. It's delicious, but just so much. I eat it twice a year. I don't eat out a lot. I try to eat healthy, cook a home.

What do you make at home?

Joan: Salads and fish mostly. I love fish so much. There's a restaurant called Angelica's Kitchen that's all vegan, but...not lame? There's also a Japanese place called Suen. They have fish, but no dairy. Oh God, so good. I also really like it fresh, like sardines and mackerel. When I go to Portugal or Spain, everyone eats so much fish there.

To you keep it pretty conservative?

Joan: Well I tried brain once! Recently actually.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. From what animal?

Joan: Calf. I didn't have all of it. I couldn't finish it because of the texture. It was too squishy. It was sauteed in other stuff. They made it taste good, but I don't think I'll have it again.

Do you like oysters?

Joan: Love oysters! No, no, it wasn't like oysters... wait, are you referring to if the consistency of oysters freak me out?

Yeah.

Joan: Nah.

Onto your musical work. We're big fans of The Deep Field. Who were some of your influences growing up?

Joan: Since I was born in 1970, but the 80's were my years. The first big show that I saw was Adam and the Ants. People know them for a couple of songs, but they had amazing records. I also loved Suzie and the Banshies, it was kinda gothy and amazing stuff. And, it's like what all the bands are trying to sound like now.

So it all comes full circle.

Joan: Yeah, it's kinda funny to me 'cause some of them sound great! They sound exactly like the ones I head back then. But that's cool, at least it's the good bands. I was also into really heavy music, so my first club show was The Bandlands, who were one of the greatest rock bands of all time. And I also saw Black Flag when I was 15 years old. I don't remember which was my first concert, but I saw them both really early. It was just pure power. So tight!
