El Sibil Concert Series

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, YesGo Productions' Concert Series at El Sibil made the top 10 events of the summer. They definitely know how to throw a house party! For a small cover of $5 dollars, one can enjoy a great lineup of local artists, in a historical art studio.

The Black Frames started the night. Armed with his ax and grunge pedal, Tommy Busby played frontman while sister, Laura, backed with bass and 'twinbrother' Patrick Cone on drums. Together this trio pumped up the crowd with their own material ["Leg Bone", "Angelina"] and their eclectic selection of cover material. There was nothing better than seeing Tommy dance on stage to "Hey Ya" or his wail to The Police's "I Can't Stand Losing You". For a moment there, I lost my mind thinking, 'and these guys are only the opening act'?

Up next was the one-man act, New Fumes. The Black Frames showed us the work of a 3-piece set, but this solo act (with his equipment arsenal) blew us away. I tried to count the tools he had: a monster of an Omni chord, Jaguar Fender, harmonica, midi controller, and projections from owls staring at you to Asian girls making out. The New Fumes were out of an acid trip, a nightmare, or both.

With El Sibilian anticipation, Analog Rebellion came out. Wasting no time, Daniel Hunter launched into sheer energy as he blasted away on the guitar, literally jamming from one side of the space to another before finding his way back to the mic. I was able to witness the magic at the last El Sibil party in July, but Daniel never ceases to amaze us with his raw devotion to the moment. I was lucky enough to make my way to the balcony to catch an aerial perspective. It's a pretty awesome schtick to see.

The last act of the night was the dance-fueled music of Mystery Skulls, which was absolutely perfect for the night. With Luis' falsetto backdrop, we were groovin' to toe-tapping, hip-swaying gold. Everybody around the dance floor started to congregate. It was a great night cap.

If you ever have the chance to go to an El Sibil party, go. In Dallas, this house party experience is quite the cultural gem. Seriously, you don't know what you're missing.
